Cary grew up in Camberwell, South London. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2006 with a BA(Hons) in Acting. In 2020 he won Best Male performance in a leading role at the Off West End Awards for playing Jamie in Country Music by Simon Stephens.
